COFFIES is supporting the Heliophysics Big Year! NASA’s Heliophysics Big Year (HBY) is a global celebration of solar science and the Sun’s influence on Earth and the entire solar system. The HBY began in October 2023 with the annular eclipse and lasts until December 2024 with the PSP Perihelion! Each month of the big year has a particular outreach theme, which you can find listed in this article.
The theme for October is “Solar Cycle and Solar Max”! This HBY theme is near and dear to our hearts in COFFIES. Stay tuned for some special programing this month on this topic!
The Solar Cycle 25 maximum is upon us and NASAs Heliophysics Big Year (HBY) is well under way! This month’s HBY theme is Solar Cycle and Solar Max. Activity on our Sun has been ramping up over the last several years. The past few months, solar activity has been at a high for Cycle 25. The peak of the solar cycle not only marks a time of great activity on the sun, but also a celebration of solar science. The HBY began with the annular eclipse of October 2023, included the total solar eclipse of 2024, and culminates with Parker Solar Probe’s closest approach to the Sun in December of 2024. In celebration of this month’s HBY theme, I will provide an update to the progress of Solar Cycle 25, discuss how the solar cycle predictions compare to the current state of solar activity, and provide an outlook for what you can expect from the Sun over the next few years.
