Flux Transport & Emergence Workshop

COFFIES Community Workshop Series '23

Thu Oct 26, 2023 09:00 - 14:00 PDT

Let’s talk about Flux Transport & Emergence (FT&E)

Solar activity is a Consequence of Fields and Flows in the Interior and Exterior of the Sun (COFFIES). COFFIES is a NASA Heliophysics DRIVE Science Center working to advance our understanding of how the Sun generates the quasi-cyclic magnetic field that extends throughout the heliosphere. Please join COFFIES DRIVE Science Center researchers online for the second annual series of one-day workshops focused on the Tachocline, Flux Transport & Emergence (FT&E), and the Near-Surface Shear Layer (NSSL).

Flux Transport & Emergence considers the complex process by which magnetic flux rises to the surface and then disburses near the surface. Two sessions address the initiation of emergence and observations and models of its near-surface characteristics; a third looks at what observed field and flow patterns may reveal about the interior dynamo.
