The observed intermediate and large-scale flows on the Sun are weaker compared to simulated ones by over an order of magnitude. This convective conundrum is likely related to the emergence of supergranulation as a particular convective length scale on the Sun. For both phenomena, different theoretical explanations have been proposed but no conclusion has been reached yet. In this talk, I will offer an overview over the observational basis for these open questions from my point of view, including a short look into theory.
